Im thinking of trying to convert one of them into a refugium or algae scrubber or something like that. Is this a good idea, or should I just leave them as filters?

A DIY refugium like this will allow you to have all the functioning parts at a fraction of the cost. This refugium was assembled using a spare 10 gallon tank, some cut glass, pumps and 100% silicone. This is my basic do it yourself refugium I built. I had three custom pieces of glass cut at a local glass shop instead of using arcylic lexan from home depo.

Cut a hole for the bulkhead on the side you want the water pumped into the Refugium. I used a 1/2" bulkhead, I think the size works better for the smaller size of this container. Install the bulkhead using teflon tape for a nice, tight seal. I used an elbow coming out of the bulkead and attached clear hose to that.

Turned out easier than I though. Now the refugium is back on track. After increasing the feedings (added an automatic feeder) and fish stock in the tank, I now stand at a rock solid 0.25 ppm Nitrates and 0.02 ppm PO4. It is low, but acceptable in my view, especially since it as been solid for the past 3 months.

Some people prefer acrylic to glass. Sometimes standard glass tanks will not accommodate the sump requirements. There are a myriad of reasons to use acrylic. Many reasons to use glass sumps also, and many reasons to diy the whole thing from either. Tall narrow tanks, do not make good sumps, short wide sumps won't fit in a lot of cases.
